Euro MP's warning over Belgian mail scam

EURO chiefs have issued a scam warning to all consumers in South Tyneside as a global criminal operation spreads across the region.

Labour MEP Stephen Hughes said a company operating from Belgium has targeted people in North East England claiming to be running prize

draws.

But after Mr Hughes raised concerns, the European Consumer Centre, in Belgium, suggests the practices of the company are illegal, and consumers should stay away.

Consumers who have been told they have won a prize have failed to recieve any cash.

Mr Hughes is urging people in South Tyneside to stay alert, and not to "fall victim to a rip-off".

He added: "I am keen to get the message out to unsuspecting people in the region not to part with any of their money.

"I have been advised that the practices of the Belgian firm are illegal.

"Any constituents who have been swindled by the company should seek legal advice on launching judicial proceedings for compensation."

Earlier this month the Gazette revealed how scam artists have created a "mugs' list" containing the names of people who have fallen victim to postal scams in the past.

We told how one 76-year-old widower, who is on the list, was fleeced out of almost 100,000 after he responded to fake lottery scams being posted through his door, believing he would win a big cash prize.

Coun Michael Clare, lead member for environment, housing and transport, today warned consumers about any scams.

He said: "It is important that residents are on their guard against unscrupulous traders such as these.

"People should be very wary of prize draws operating from abroad, and remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

"We receive many calls from people who feel they have been misled.

"But new regulations being proposed to stamp out unfair trading practices will ensure people will be protected from these types of scams."
