Exhibition shows the wonder of wool

NIFTY knitters in South Tyneside produced an enchanting exhibition.

The Customs House, in South Shields, has been giving visitors a chance to see what a traditional Victorian living room looks like – if it was made entirely of wool.

It was created by the venue's Knit and Knatter Group, famous for knitting a boat to sail up the Tyne.

The group came together in 2009 for the Casting Off ... A Coat For A Boat project, which saw hundreds of people knit a woollen cover for a fishing boat.

Since then, the members have set up their own group, and haven't stopped knitting.

Their efforts were put into Knitted Victorian Christmas for the Upper Fusion Gallery at The Customs House, in Mill Dam.

Customs House visual arts development officer Esen Kaya said: "Everybody who sees the knitting comments on how magical it feels to enter a knitted wonderland."

The free exhibition is open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 10pm, until January 10.
