RESCUE services at the scene of a serious road accident in South Tyneside in a picture taken by an eye-witness.

Three people were injured when a lorry hit a South Tyneside bridge and its digger fell off crushing the car behind

It’s understood the lorry hit the railway bridge and the digger, which it was transporting, toppled off onto the Vauxhall Antara behind.

Firefighters from Hebburn Fire Station spent more than an hour cutting the driver free, before they were taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary by the Great North Air Ambulance, with serious injuries.

Two other passengers, who were self-rescued, were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields, with minor injuries.

At about 11am today, police and firefighters were called the A194 at Fellgate, near Leam Lane, in Jarrow.
