Fans group would welcome Moat Toon talks

A NEWCASTLE United supporters' group said it would welcome talks with South Tyneside businessman Barry Moat, with a view to buying out unpopular owner Mike Ashley.

Newcastle United Supporters' Trust last week launched its ambitious Yes We Can campaign to raise millions of pounds to take over the club.

The campaign came after Mr Moat's offer was turned down by Mr Ashley, after he failed to come up with the 80m asking price.

But at the weekend Mr Moat, who founded South Shields retailer Premier Direct, spoke of how he has not given up hope on buying the club and is waiting for another opportunity.

Mark Jensen, spokesman for the Supporters' Trust, said: "We welcome any serious offers for Newcastle, but this is deja vu.

"We will continue our fan-based campaign to make the club accountable to the city again.

"It is only a week in, and we've had a massive response pledging investment from large and small investors.

"We've made approaches to Mr Moat previously and had no reply, but we're happy to speak to anyone who has the long-term interests of Newcastle at heart."
