Farewell to Busby Babe Albert Scanlon
SOME of the biggest names in British football gathered yesterday to say farewell to former Newcastle United and Manchester United legend Albert Scanlon.
Bobby Charlton led the tributes to Scanlon, one of the legendary "Busby Babes" at All Souls Church in Weaste, Salford.
The ceremony was also attended by Sir Alex Ferguson, Dennis Law, Nobby Stiles, Bill Foulkes and Harry Gregg.
Scanlon, who also played 27 games and scored six times for the Magpies between 1960 and 1962 was, along with Charlton, Foulkes and Gregg, a survivor of the 1958 Munich air disaster, which claimed the lives of eight members of the Manchester United team.
He died last month, aged 74.
Scanlon's extended family were joined by around 300 mourners for the funeral service and Charlton said the good wishes from everyone at Manchester United went to the family.
He said when he first came to the club Manchester-born Scanlon befriended him, showed him around the area and took him to his own home for a meal.
Charlton added: "Albert was, without question, a Busby Babe through and through.
"I always have fond memories of him – certainly the fans will remember him."
Scanlon made his debut for Sir Matt Busby's Manchester United first team in 1954 and was a title winner in 1956 and 1957, before he was on the ill-fated flight from Belgrade to Manchester following a European Cup match in February 1958.
Scanlon suffered severe head injuries but went on to play for United the next season, scoring 16 goals.
