Fashion show will be Out Of This World
THE Gazette's 10th annual fashion show promises to be Out Of This World.
This year's stage extravaganza will help raise funds for the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF) and Cancer Connections.
MKMRF recently announced its support for pioneering research into treating mesothelioma – the fatal asbestos-related cancer – with stem cells.
Dr Sam Janes, a senior lecturer and honorary consultant at University College London, will receive 100,000 from the charity to carry out his work, which has already been shown to kill tumour cells in other types of cancer.
If successful, this may introduce a new era of treatments for mesothelioma patients.
The MKMRF has previously provided support to a group of medical experts researching the chemotherapy drug Alimta.
It is hoped the work will make the drug more effective for use in treating mesothelioma patients on the NHS.
Our show's main sponsor, Thompsons Solicitors, which has an office in Fowler Street, South Shields, has backed MKMRF since it was founded in 2002 by Chris Knighton, in memory of her husband.
The personal injury specialists are experts in asbestos litigation, as well as dealing with other industrial diseases and accidents in and out of work, including accidents abroad and on the road.
It is the fifth time the Gazette has named the MKMRF as one of its chosen charities to benefit from the fashion show.
Thompsons Solicitors works closely with those suffering from mesothelioma, and their families.
Ian McFall, head of asbestos policy and a patron of MKMRF, said: "Mesothelioma is such a devastating illness for people who are diagnosed with it, as well as their families, that it is hard to imagine how the situation they find themselves in could be any more unbearable.
"However, many of our clients have said the shock and distress they felt when they were told they had mesothelioma quickly turned to anger and disbelief when they learned that mesothelioma was caused by inhaling asbestos at work decades ago and that their illness could have been prevented had their employer only taken more care.
"In many of these cases, we are able to obtain substantial awards of compensation for our clients and their families, even where the employers no longer exist.
"We deal with claims at no cost to our client. We are genuinely concerned to look after the interests of individuals.
"Anyone diagnosed with mesothelioma who believes they were exposed to asbestos at work should seek advice immediately about claiming compensation."
Thompsons Solicitors is the largest specialist personal injury, employment rights and trade union law firm in the UK, with 30 offices.
Its South Shields branch opened in April 2004 and has recovered more than 10m in compensation for injured local people in the last four years.
The personal injury and industrial disease lawyers team is headed by team manager Hebburn-born David Mole, a specialist in dealing with a full range of personal injury and industrial disease claims.
Solicitor Mick Laffey, also from Hebburn, works from the office as regional client manager and often appears as a legal commentator on Metro Radio.
Mick Laffey said: "We're delighted to get involved in the fashion show once again and to be supporting talent in the borough.
"I'm looking forward to going along on the opening night to see what's on display.
"It's great supporting the local community and young talent in South Tyneside."
