Fun run revived after 20-year gap

RUNNERS will hit the streets again to help launch this year's Jarrow Festival in style.

The once-popular Hedworthfield Fun Run, which used to attract about 200 runners, will be revived after almost 20 years.

Fun runners will line up at the start of the race, on Saturday, May 17.

Coun Steve Harrison, an Independent member for the Fellgate and Hedworth ward, who suggested reviving the race, pulled on his running shoes to help promote the event.

A veteran of five marathons, plus 12 Great North Runs, Coun Harrison said: "I actually won the Hedworthfield Fun Run 20 years ago, in 1988, when the future international athlete Vince Wilson won the junior race.

"The run used to attract about 200 people, but it was discontinued in about 1990.

"I came up with the idea of reviving the run, which will be held at the start of the Jarrow Festival.

"I would like to think we can make the race as popular as it used to be."

Runners will be asked to assemble at Hedworthfield Community Association, in Cornhill, Jarrow, at 11.30am on May 17.

The race will start at noon and will follow a 3.8-mile course, incorporating two laps of the footpaths around the Fellgate Estate.

Coun Harrison added: "I think the revival of the race is the perfect way to start this year's Jarrow Festival.

"There will be prizes for the different age groups, plus spot prizes for runners in fancy dress.

"All finishers receive a medal and refreshments, and I would urge people to pick up an entry."

The cost of taking part in the Hedworthfield Fun Run is 2.50

for adults and 1 for children under 15.

Entry forms are available from all community centres in Jarrow, plus entries will be taken on the day, between 11am and 11.30am.

Entry forms and more details are also available from Coun Harrison on 425 2550.
