Gang-busting cops make 200 arrests

ORGANISED crime gangs across the region are being smashed by a team of specialist police officers.

More than 200 criminals have been arrested – including four from South Tyneside – following the launch of the Total Policing Task Force in June.

The team was brought together to target crooks involved in money laundering, drug trafficking, car theft and burglary.

Since it was launched, drugs worth millions have been taken off the streets – including 5m of cannabis.

A total of 206 people have been arrested for offences including conspiracy to supply controlled drugs, money laundering and distraction burglaries.

Firearms, ammunition, and 23 vehicles are among the items seized, plus more than 500,000 – 90,000 of which was found stuffed into carrier bags in one house.

In South Tyneside three men and a woman were arrested as part of operations launched by the task force.

Among items seized in the borough were 18,321 and two air rifles.

Three quad bikes and four motorcycles were also seized from homes in Priestley Court and Gibbons Walk, Biddick Hall, earlier this year.

Detective Superintend-ent Peter Farrell, of the task force, said: "Hundreds of suspected criminals have been arrested, many of whom have already been charged and convicted.

"We are going further than ever before to get into the space criminals occupy to stop them carrying out their illegal enterprises."
