Geordie Pantsman is an internet sensation!

GEORDIE Pantsman Gary Craig's record-breaking stunt has become an internet sensation.

Architect Gary, from Whitburn, pulled on 211 sets of underpants at Dusk Nightclub, South Shields, last week to smash the Guinness World Record.

And after the Gazette first revealed the 52-year-old's bid back in February, Gary has gone global.

His story has been picked up by newspapers all over the world, and video clips of his bid have been seen by almost 25,000 viewers on internet site YouTube – with one fan uploading his own attempt at putting on the most socks in tribute.

And last night the video was even featured on prime time BBC One topical comedy show Have I Got News For You.

Host Alexander Armstrong played the clip to the show's guests Ian Heslop, Paul Merton, Victoria Cohen and comedian Richard Herring.

And this weekend it is due to be shown on the BBC's Odd Box programme, which shows the 10 most "weird and wonderful" internet videos of the week.

Gary tackled the record to raise cash for the Gazette's Quids In campaign, which aims to help South Shields-based charity Cancer Connections buy a new home as a base.

He said: "I can't believe how far it's gone, but the only reason I did it in the first place was for the charity.

"I've got to say I was over the moon when I heard it was going to be on Have I Got News for you because that's my favourite programme.

"I guess it's one of those wacky videos that seems to get noticed just because of how different it is.

"But I'm hoping it will get bigger now, because it will mean more exposure for the Quids In campaign."

The event, on April 1, raised more than 1,000 on the night and his total now stands at 3,000. His goal is 10,000.

The video shows hundreds of underpants on display on the nightclub dancefloor before Gary enters the building to the Rocky theme tune.

It then shows Gary pulling on the pants one at a time until he completes all 211 to raucous applause – breaking the previous world record of 200, which was held by an Australian.

Gary, who lives with wife Jackie, 49, and daughters Sarah, 25, and Amy, 23, said: "I just remember all the underpants cutting off all my circulation, but the pain was all worth it."
