Geordie Dancer v Mackem Mover: the rematch

NEVER mind the Tyne-Wear derby this year – the biggest battle for football pride will happen on a South Tyneside dancefloor.

Dusk Nightclub, in South Shields, will be holding a special dance-off between two of the region's most watched groovers – the Mackem Mover and the Geordie Dancer.

The pair became famous when they squared up against each other on Sky Sports 1's Soccer AM show last month.

And the Mackem Mover, otherwise known as Stephen Turner, made it the second win of the season for the Black Cats when he beat his rival, real name David Johnson.

Sunderland AFC fan Mr Turner, 45, from Stanley, was captured performing a robotic dance on Sky Sports cameras during half time at the Wear-Tyne derby in October.

Pundit Jamie Redknapp coined the phrase the "Mackem Mover" and his fame has risen ever since, with thousands of hits on video sharing website YouTube.

Magpies fan Mr Johnson, 38, of Witton Gilbert, became a cult hero in 2004, when his energetic pre-match moves earned him a following of thousands on YouTube.

He was invited to perform on the pitch at St James's Park, and was catapulted into the national spotlight.

Due to the success of the Soccer AM event, which has had more than 120,000 hits on YouTube, Dusk's marketing director John Shaw signed the pair up for a dance-off on January 31 – the day before the derby.

And businessman Carl Mowatt, of South Shields-based printing company Agrafica NE Ltd, has sponsored Mr Turner and kitted him out with this season's Sunderland strip, along with other merchandise.

Mr Shaw said: "We spoke to Steve after his show on Soccer AM and decided we wanted a dance-off at our club between him and the Geordie Dancer.

"After a few days' negotiation, the two agreed to do the show the night before the derby at St James's Park."
