Getting breathless in honour of mum

A WOMAN ran out of breath doing the Great North Run – to make sure others can get theirs back.

Karen Redpath, 40, of South Shields, used her sponsorship money to buy four nebulisers for the acute respiratory assessment service (ARAS) at South Tyneside District Hospital.

The donation was made in memory of her mum, Brenda Spencer, 62, of South Shields, who suffered from respiratory illness chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and died of pneumonia in February 2007.

Mrs Redpath, who also collected money in lieu of flowers at her mother's funeral for the ARAS team, said: "She used to go to the ARAS team.

"When she needed a nebuliser, they didn't have enough, so that is the whole reason for the donation.

"The money raised will, I hope, aid the work of the ARAS team in helping to support those combating respiratory disease."

Mrs Redpath completed September's half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields in three hours.
