A FOUR-year-old girl is today fighting for her life in hospital after suffering head injuries in a car crash.

Police are appealing for information about the accident, which happened at about 6.30pm yesterday on Leam Lane, near the Lindisfarne roundabout at Jarrow.

For reasons yet to be established, a silver Peugeot 406 struck the rear of a red VW Polo.

This caused the Polo to hit with a silver Renault Clio, which then crashed into a black Honda CRV and a grey Citroen Berlingo.

A number of people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

But the girl, who was in the back seat of the Polo, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

This morning she was in a critical condition.

Police are keen to speak to any motorists who were in the area and may have seen what happened.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Motor Patrols South on 101, ext 69191.
