A PARK in South Tyneside has been named as one of the best in the country.
South Marine Park in South Shields has been awarded a Green Flag, which are handed out to parks that are kept to high standards and have excellent facilities for visitors.
It is the fifth year running that the park has received the accolade, which is handed out by Keep Britain Tidy.
Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of the council and lead member for culture and leisure services, said: “We are thrilled to have received the Green Flag award for the fifth year running.
“It is a highly respected national standard and is testament to all the fantastic work that has gone into keeping South Marine Park at its best for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.
“The park is a wonderful place for the whole family to visit and relax in.
“It is one of the jewels of South Tyneside and is loved by residents and visitors who come from miles around to enjoy its many great facilities and natural beauty as it changes throughout the seasons.”
Coun Kerr also praised council workers and volunteers for keeping the park in excellent condition.
He added: “Above all this is a significant achievement and reward for all the people who work so hard to make the park such a special place and keep it to such a high standard.
“The council staff working in partnership with ISS Facility Services, the Friends of the Parks and volunteers, all do a wonderful job and I am so pleased that once again they have received national recognition.”
Margaret Thompson, chairwoman of the Friends of North and South Marine Parks, said: “I am so pleased that the park has won this award for the fifth year running.
“It’s wonderful it is still considered to be worthy of such a prestigious accolade for the high standards we all work together to maintain.”
Across the UK, more parks than ever before have been handed Green Flags, including 64 in the North East.

“A Green Flag provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

“That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
Across the UK it’s been a record-breaking year meaning more parks and greens spaces than ever before will be flying a Green Flag.
