Helen helps set underwater ironing record

PEOPLE do daft things to raise money for good causes – but it would be hard to top Helen Dainton's record-breaking go at ironing underwater.

The 41-year-old, of Marsden, South Shields, was one of 128 scuba divers who braved freezing waters for a challenge on the world record for ironing underwater.

The fundraisers, all members of the Yorkshire Divers club, had been looking for an unusual way to generate cash for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

And when they discovered a group of Australian divers held the world record after getting 72 people ironing underwater at the same time, they decided that was the challenge for them.

Mrs Dainton, a customer services manager at South Tyneside Council, said: "Each year, we raise money for different charities, and we wanted to do something a bit different this time.

"I'm still grinning from the event. To see 128 people put all their diving gear on and then put up their ironing boards is quite a sight, let me tell you.

"We all took an item of clothing to iron, and I bought a RNLI tea cloth for the occasion. Everyone thinks I'm mad, but it was great."

Mrs Dainton made a 700-mile round trip to the National Diving and Activity Centre, near Chepstow in Gloucestershire, for the record bid.

The group managed to get 86 people ironing in a 10-minute period, raising 8,000-plus.
