Hi-tech solution to tunnel jams
NEW technology has been drafted in to ensure motorists using the Tyne Tunnel have up-to-date information at their fingertips.
Tunnel users can now use their mobile phones to find out exactly how long it will take them to get through the tunnel.
Using digital video technology that monitors traffic movements either side of the tunnel, operator TT2 is now able to provide customers with accurate and up-to-the-minute journey times to cross the river.
Average journey times are calculated every 30 seconds for both directions and the results are displayed on the Tyne Tunnel website (www.tynetunnel.info).
People with Wap-enabled mobile phones can now also receive this information direct to their phones via http://www.tynetunnel.info/wap.
Trevor Jackson, managing director of TT2, says: "I use the tunnel each day so I know how useful it will be to our customers to have reliable information about their journey time before they set off.
"We've been testing the system for some time, and I am confident that this will prove invaluable to customers."
In order to access the Wap journey time information customers will require a mobile phone with a Wap browser built-in and a Sim card that supports data transfer.
