Hit-and-run pup loses a limb

A DOG lost his leg after being involved in a hit-and-run accident in Jarrow.

Timber, a six-year-old Jack Russell, was out with his owner Andrew Savage, last month, when he was struck by a white van.

The former rescue dog was left for dead, while a stunned Mr Savage looked on in horror.

He said: "His injuries were truly awful and I really didn't think he'd survived."

Mr Savage, had taken his dog on their regular visit to see his mother, Barbara, when Timber ran into the road and collided with the oncoming vehicle, which carried on without stopping.

The 52-year-old, from Jarrow, rushed his pet to Blythman and Partners veterinary practice, in Hebburn, for treatment. The damage was so severe that after an initial operation, surgeons decided to take further action to prevent infection, and amputated Timber's hind leg.

Mr Savage said: "The staff were absolutely wonderful.

"The care and attention Timber received is unsurpassed.

"We were really afraid we had lost him forever – he's such a happy-go-lucky dog and we would miss him terribly as he's one of the family.

"Even though he's lost his leg he is still a very sprightly, friendly dog and is coping very well."

He added: "No-one expects such a horrible thing could happen to one of their pets and there's only so much you can do to prevent accidents."
