The application was first submitted in June 2015 and the firm say the development will also support 1,170 jobs.

Fenton Hewitt, sales director at Barratt Homes North East, said: “This site, situated on Adair Way in Hebburn, will be called Bedewell Court and will consist of 335 homes once the build is complete, with properties ranging from two, three and four bedrooms.

“Work is set to launch this autumn and will see 1,170 jobs supported by the scheme across the life of the site.”

He added: “We believe this will be a great addition to Hebburn and we are excited to be able to offer much needed high quality homes to the area. We are sure we will have many happy homebuyers at these new properties, which will be perfect for first time buyers and families alike.”

The majority of the new development, which will also contain some social housing, will be served by a single vehicle access road from Adair Way, with limited direct access to homes from Red House Road and Cambridge Avenue.

Coun Allan West, lead member for housing and transport at South Tyneside Council, said: “We welcome new development and housing within the borough.

“The application for this development was considered by our Planning Committee and determined in accordance with both local and national policies and guidance.

“The committee considered the proposed development to be appropriate and planning permission has now been granted for 335 new homes within Hebburn.”

The last company currently trading on Bedewell Industrial Estate is now also looking toward moving into a new home - in Washington.

Bill Wilson, who had spent the past 26 years building up BNB Fabrications Ltd, a sheet metal contractor, will be relocating at the beginning of next year.

Three years ago his company, which has a 4,800sq ft paint shop and shot blasting facility, was granted a five-year ‘stay of execution’ by the council’s planning committee to remain on the land.

However, even when he relocates, he will still own the building and will do so until a buyer is found.

Mr Wilson said: “There was no place for us any more in South Tyneside. We have far better opportunities in Washington.

“The company is still performing very well and we’re aiming to be on our new site most probably at the beginning of next year.

“Unless a buyer is found I still own this factory and I will for the next 999 years.

“Nobody has approached me to buy it and demolish it, so these new homes are basically going to be built right next to it.”
