Ian's new gym is fit for the purpose!
A STATE-of-the art gym aims to raise the bar when it comes to fitness training in South Shields.
Ian Morgan's Powerhouse Gym, above B and M's supermarket in North Street, opened on Monday, and the owners say fitness fans across South Tyneside are queuing up to join.
Hebburn-based Ian Morgan, 45, who already owns a successful gym at Bill Quay in Pelaw, Gateshead, said: "I wanted to give the people of South Shields a gym they could be proud of. There are some good gyms here, but we wanted to take it to the next level.
"This is an American-style gym, like Gold's Gyms," said Mr Morgan, who took up bodybuilding at the age of 18, still competes as a professional with the International Federation of Bodybuilders, and trains seven days a week.
His expertise will be available to his new gym's members, as will free training and dietary advice.
The father-of-three said: "We will hopefully offer members a wider and better range of services than other gyms."
Facilities include a women-only fitness suite and snack bar.
The refurbishment of the site, which was formerly a restaurant called No10, was done in partnership with the development's co-owner, Frank Pitchers, from South Shields.
Mr Pitchers, 51, said: "I think people will be impressed by the new facilities.
"We've also got permission to renovate the old pool hall next door. In there, we plan to run boxercise, aerobics and spin bike classes.
"There will also be a steam suite, which will have a steam room and jacuzzi. I think people will be over the moon with it, as there isn't one in South Shields."
A year's membership fee costs 40 and after that 10 per week, which includes the use of all the facilities. Those wishing to just turn up can pay 4.50 a session.
Discounts for students, NHS staff, the police and the armed forces will also be available.
