IT was a case of ‘cool Britannia’ as South Tyneside got yet another covering of snow.
The white stuff started falling just after 1pm yesterday, and continued throughout the afternoon.
The Britannia figurine on South Shields Town Hall looked rather chilly as flakes gathered on her armour.
And shoppers in King Street battled against icy temperatures, which plummeted to 0C, but felt more like –6C due to the wind chill factor.
However, forecasters aren’t expecting the snow to stick around for very long.
John Lee, forecaster for the Press Association’s weather division MeteoGroup, said: “There is a great large area of snow across the country, but it is being quite quickly followed by rain in the west.
“So for areas that are having snow, it will turn into rain.”
Today is predicted to be a slightly warmer 3C with sunny spells, while tomorrow and Saturday should see highs of 7C.
