FLATTERED ... John Allom has been nominated for a Pride award.

FLATTERED ... John Allom has been nominated for a Pride award.

A NATURAL history enthusiast has turned his hobby into his dream job.

John Allom has always enjoyed the outdoors, and now he works at West Boldon Lodge in Newcastle Road, West Boldon, teaching children about nature.

The 40-year-old, originally from South Shields, but now living in Gateshead, has been nominated in the Greener South Tyneside category in this year’s Pride of South Tyneside Awards.

He was nominated by West Boldon Lodge co-ordinator, Rebecca Gibbs, who said: “John has been a member of staff at West Boldon Lodge for more than a decade.

“During this time he has inspired thousands of young people to care for our beautiful world.

“He runs programmes with school groups, weekend clubs and is one of the most experienced Forest School leaders in the North East.”

The father-of-one runs adult training courses in conservation skills and looks after the site in winter.

He said: “Natural history is something that has always interested me, and I love my job.

“I was surprised to be nominated for this award. but very flattered.

“I’m sure there are hundreds of teachers in the borough who have done more for kids.”
