Labour retain seat in by-election

LABOUR have held a ward in Jarrow after a by-election triggered by the death of a councillor.

First-time candidate Ken Stephenson polled 854 votes in the Primrose ward, beating off the challenge of the BNP's Pete Hodgkinson, who gained 566 votes.

Mr Stephenson, 40, a Labour Party member for 15 years, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have held the seat for Labour and I'm looking forward to working for people in the Primrose ward."

The by-election had been triggered by the death just before Christmas of Coun Barrie Scorer, who represented the ward for Labour for almost 40 years.

Coun Scorer, 63, a former Mayor of South Tyneside, died months after undergoing heart surgery.

The other two sitting Labour members in the Primrose ward are Coun Emma Lewell and Coun Jim Perry.
