Leaders' reaction to debate call

Coun George Elsom, the leader of the Real Independents: "I am quite willing to discuss my party's policies with the people of South Tyneside, and let them see what the Real Independents stand for."

Coun Jane Branley, leader of the Independent Alliance: "What an excellent idea. I would be more than happy to go along, but that's if it ever happens.

"Even if this idea doesn't come off with other party leaders, I will personally be more than happy to hold question and answer sessions anywhere the people of the borough would like."

n Labour's Coun Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council: "I have no problem taking a look at having a debate, but I'm a little cautious given David's record of attending council meetings, which is a little sparse. There is no guarantee he would turn up for a public debate. These themed debates are something all party leaders and councillors can take part in."

Leader of the Progressives, Coun Jim Capstick, said: "I think this is a central party idea, and what exactly does Coun Potts hope to gain by it?

"Before I would sign up to this, you would have to let me consider it, and I'd need more facts and information about it.

"I'm very wary of this approach now that we're coming up to a general election."

Liberal Democrat leader, Coun Joe Abbott, was unavailable for comment.
