Life's luxuries sent to our front line troops in Afghanistan

SOLDIERS serving in Afghanistan are to benefit from some of life's little luxuries – thanks to the generosity of people in Simonside.

For several weeks donations have been pouring into Simonside Social Club in Winskell Road.

And with the boxes chocked full of goodies piling up at the club, they have now been handed to the Support Our Soldiers (SOS) charity, which is to post them to our servicemen and women.

Tony Brown and co-organiser Denise Gibson today thanked everyone who had supported the effort.

The items collected included luxuries which are in short supply on the front line, such as toiletries, savoury snacks, sweets and even paracetamol.

Sgt Paul Reid, who served in Iraq last year, said the donations would be a real boost to the troops.

He said: "Without a shadow of a doubt these donations will be really appreciated. It shows the troops people back home are thinking about them."

Sgt Reid, based at South Shields Army Careers Information Office, added: "Things like Pot Noodles are great – it makes a change from the usual boil in a bag food. It may seem a little thing, but being able to use a shower gel is such a treat as well."

Among those thanked for their support are staff and shoppers at Tesco in Newcastle Road, including manager Caroline Roberts, Monkton Junior School, in Dame Flora Robson Avenue, Pat Fusedale, Castle View School, in Sunderland, and all the members and non-members at Simonside Social Club.

Mr Brown said: "I, with my co-organiser Denise, thank one and all for the kindness and generosity that you have shown us, and I am sure the troops will join with us to thank you all."
