BIOMASS BLAZE ... The Port of Tyne.

BIOMASS BLAZE ... The Port of Tyne.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Port of Tyne this afternoon to tackle a major fire.

Around 50 firefighters were called out at about 3pm today after a ten-metre-high shed containing biomass pellets caught fire.

Firefighters remain at the scene tackling the fire at the plant, near the container terminal at the port.

A port spokeswoman confirmed it was working alongside firefighters on site.

She added: “We can’t say too much at this moment, but we can confirm there has been no explosion and that no one has been injured.”

The Port is expected to release a full statement later this afternoon.
