Man dies after being shot by police in South Shields

The man shot by a Northumbria Police firearms officer on Tuesday has died, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has announced.

James Wilson, 24, of Candlish Street, Westoe, had been an induced coma after he was shot.

Firearms officers were called to Frenchmans Way in Horsley Hill, South Shields, at 1.02am on Tuesday to reports of a man in possession of a handgun and James was shot.

IPCC Commissioner Carl Gumsley said: “Our thoughts are with James’ friends and family at this very difficult time.”

James taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and was transferred to the Freeman Hospital.

His family had been anxiously awaiting news by his bedside since the incident.

His brother Carl said the police bullet went through James’ liver and came out the other side, also damaging his lungs.

The IPCC said a "non-police weapon" had been recovered from the scene, but have not yet confirmed details.

Carl said his brother was carrying a BB gun when he went to his girlfriend’s home on Tuesday in response to a dispute with another man.
