A MAN’S body has been found at the foot of cliffs in South Shields, after he was arrested but escaped from police.
At 12.34am today, officers were called to a report of a group of people fighting in the car park at the Marsden Grotto pub.
They attended and arrested a man in connection with the fight, and he was placed inside a police vehicle.
As officers went to arrest a second man, their first prisoner escaped and ran off.
Inquiries were carried out to locate him, and at 1.03am his body was found at the bottom of Marsden Grotto cliffs.
The air ambulance was called and the man was given CPR treatment by officers until paramedics arrived.
Ambulance crews treated the man, however he was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
The area around the cliffs has been cordoned off by police while inquiries are carried out into the incident,
There will be officers in the area throughout today to speak to people.
