March to back our troops in war zones

A FUNDRAISING event to support British troops serving overseas has been hailed a major success.

Lyndsey Urwin, manager of Tavistock Italia, in Sea Road, South Shields, helped raise 5,000 for the Support Our Soldiers (SOS) charity, by organising a sponsored walk.

Mrs Urwin's husband Ronnie, 27, has been a member of the elite Parachute Regiment for the past nine years.

She decided to raise cash for SOS after hearing from her husband about the many soldiers serving abroad who receive nothing from home.

The walk took place on June 8, with fundraisers completing the eight miles distance between the Best Western Roker Hotel in Sunderland and the Tavistock Italia restaurant Mrs Urwin manages.

The 24-year-old said: "The money we raised will go towards sending gift packages to soldiers who normally receive nothing.

"It's a great morale booster and reminds the soldiers of the support they have back home."

When they reached their destination, walkers and supporters were invited to take part in a family fun day – the proceeds of which were added to the final amount raised on the day.

Mrs Urwin, from South Shields, said: "I would like to thank everyone who took part in the walk and Tavistock Leisure for the support in organising the event."

Keith Donkin, director of Tavistock Leisure, added: "We were pleased to support Lyndsey in her fundraising efforts.

"We realise the importance of the job the soldiers are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan and it's great to help where we can."
