Marine lecturer sails into the sunset

A MARINE lecturer has set sail for her retirement.

Patricia Uttridge, head of marine deck cadets at South Tyneside College, has retired after 36 years at the marine college.

She started at the college in 1973 as a lecturer in meteorology in the faculty of nautical science.

In 1983, she was promoted to senior lecturer and then to the head of the deck officer of the watch department in 2002.

She said: "My work at South Tyneside College has been very rewarding having enabled me to deliver my specialist subject of meteorology in a maritime setting.

"It has also been a privilege to assist and advise numerous students about developing their careers in the Merchant Navy."

Gary Hindmarch, head of the marine faculty at the college, added: "Patricia has been a credit to the marine college and she will certainly be missed.

"Her dedication and commitment to her students has helped so many learners progress with their careers, we wish her a long and happy retirement."

Ms Uttridge added: "May I take this opportunity to thank all the colleagues I have worked with over the years and extend my best wishes to them and the college in all future ventures."
