Mayors unite to back X Factor Joe

THE mayors of South Tyneside and Newcastle came together in a joint bid to get singing star Joe McElderry to the X Factor finals.

The South Shields 18-year-old, who goes to Newcastle College, is now down to the final six acts and just three shows away from the final.

And to both borough Mayor and Mayoress, Coun John Anglin and wife Chris, and their Newcastle counterparts - the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Coun Michael Cookson and the Lady Mayoress Dorrie Cookson - are right behind him.

All four said they tuned into the show when they were not out on mayoral work.

Yesterday they were joined on the steps of South Shields Town Hall by council staff all backing Joe to win the 1m recording contract.

Coun Anglin said: "Joe is representing the town, the borough and the area fantastically well.

"He's such a good singer. He's also done a lot of work for charities – and he's still doing his bit.

"He's a real role model for youngsters in South Tyneside and he's just the tip of the iceberg of what the borough has to offer."

Coun Cookson added: "Joe is really enthusiastic – he's a typical warm-hearted young Geordie. We wish him all the success."

Both Mrs Cookson and Mrs Anglin agreed Joe's good looks also gave him a real chance in the competition.

Mrs Anglin said: "He has a lovely smile and he's so cute. We have been watching him from the beginning and tape the show if we're out on official duties."

Mrs Cookson added: "I picked him out from the beginning – he's got real talent. He has got a lovely smile but he has an attractive personality to go with it."

Council posters are also being put up across the borough saying: "We're so proud of Joe McElderry for flying the flag for South Tyneside.

"Please give him your support and vote Joe to win!"

If you want to show Joe you're backing him, why not join Joe McElderry's Official Shields Gazette Support Group on Facebook, or put up a Go Joe! poster.

Download your poster from our website – www.shieldsgazette.com – call in at the Gazette's office in Chapter Row, South Shields, ask one of our Gazette sellers for a copy, or pop into your local newsagent.

And don't forget to vote for Joe this weekend to keep him in the competition.
