MEMORIAL BENCH TRIBUTE FOR GLEN

A MEMORIAL to murdered teenager Glen Corner has been unveiled at his former school.

The 16-year-old was stabbed to death in East Avenue, Harton, South Shields, the day after collecting his GCSE results from Harton Technology College.

He gained eight top grades and wanted to go to college to study to become a marine engineer.

Tragically, his life was cut short as he celebrated his academic achievements with friends on August 25 this year.

In an emotional ceremony, some of those friends and his family watched as a bench bearing his name was unveiled at the school.

The school is also mourning Hannah Ferguson, 15, who was knocked down and killed on John Reid Road just before midnight on Friday, December 15.

Headteacher Ken Gibson said: "We are gathered here to remember Glen, who attended Harton Technology College from 2001 to 2006.

"He had just received news of his marvellous examination success and was celebrating that news, and his 16th birthday, when he was taken away so tragically.

"It has been a very difficult term for the school, with Glen's death and the devastating news about one of our Year 10 students, Hannah Ferguson.

"Our grief is insignificant in comparison to that of the family and friends.

"I am delighted that Glen's family and friends are able to join us in unveiling a special bench and plaque in memory of Glen."

Glen's grandmother, Pat McDougall, thanked Mr Gibson on behalf of the family for his kind words and the tribute.

His mother, Susanne Hilton, 33, added: "I think it is an honour really. It shows how well thought of he was at school."

* Lee Firman, 18, of Thornholme Avenue, South Shields, has been charged with Glen's murder and is due to stand trial at Newcastle Crown Court in February.
