THE race to become the next MP for South Shields is hotting up after a top trade union gave its backing to a Labour candidate.
Coun Mark Walsh, who represents Horsley Hill on South Tyneside Council, has received the endorsement of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
Dave Hopper, Durham NUM’s general secretary, described Coun Walsh as the “right man for the job”.
He added: “The North East area NUM is supporting Mark, who is a Unison member.
“He has a long record working in local government.
“We feel the work he has done in the field of benefits and assisting people will hold him in good stead in the current climate.
“We also think it is not before time that the local Labour Party had a local candidate standing.
“We are happy to endorse Mark and wish him every success.”
