MP slams ‘tax on strivers’

STEPHEN HEPBURN ... says hard-working people are being hit by tax changes.

STEPHEN HEPBURN ... says hard-working people are being hit by tax changes.

JARROW MP Stephen Hepburn is angry that thousands of families in the area will be hit by George Osborne’s ‘strivers’ tax.’

The Chancellor plans to cut support for working families.

Mr Hepburn, pictured, said: “Last week he said it’s the shirkers who are affected by his cut to tax credits and benefits. But it turns out it isn’t true.

“It’s actually a tax on strivers, the majority of people hit are working people. At the same time they are cutting taxes for millionaires while millions are struggling to make ends meet.”

He added: “To pay for his failures, George Osborne is taking £6.7bn from working age benefits and tax credits over the next four years, and that will hit 6,800 families in the Jarrow constituency.

“Working families will be amazed that George Osborne is asking them to pick up the tab for his failure at the same time as he gives a tax cut to millionaires.”
