MOTORISTS were this afternoon warned of delays after a multi-vehicle crash on the A19.
The accident happened on the northbound carriageway, near Hylton Bridge in Sunderland.
Drivers heading towards South Tyneside are experiencing serious delays.
South Tyneside health chief Lorraine Lambert was among those who took to social media network Twitter about the hold-ups.
She tweeted: “Daughter stuck in major queuing traffic #A19 northbound approaching the 183 - 6 car accident & road closure avoid if poss.”
The Highways Agency confirmed on its www.trafficengland.co.uk website: “On the A19 northbound between the junctions with the A690 and A1231 there are currently delays of 20 mins due to a multi-vehicle accident closing two lanes. Normal traffic conditions expected from 5pm.”
