Music venue plan for old brewery
CHANGES are brewing at a Jarrow pub.
Although all Jarrow Brewery's beer production is now done at its Westoe Brewhouse, at the Maltings pub in South Shields, the Robin Hood will remain its head office and cold cask storage and distribution centre.
And the Jarrow pub, in Primrose Hill, is set for a major refurbishment, including the creation of a new entertainment venue.
Brewery owners Jess and Alison McConnell are in talks with South Tyneside Council about the proposed revamp.
Mr McConnell said: "We should be submitting a planning application for the new entertainment room at the Robin Hood within the next fortnight.
"Although the schedule is tight, our hope is that the work will be completed in time for the new venue to open for Christmas.
"The aim is to feature lots of live music in the room, including bands and singers at weekends, as well as providing a showcase for local talent, as the Robin Hood did in the 1980s."
Showcase
The original brewery plant has been sold to the Blue Monkey, a new brewing company in Nottinghamshire, and it hopes to have some of its beers on tap at at the Jarrow pub soon.
The Westoe Brewhouse, in Claypath Lane, has been revamped too, adding two more fermenting vessels and a cold water chilling system.
Mr McConnell added: "We tend to get packed at the Robin Hood at weekends, and the refurbishment will help us provide more seating areas.
"While the main bar area will remain pretty much the same, the new entertainment venue will provide a great showcase for local talent and visiting bands and singers."
The pub's brew bar, which features a wealth of memorabilia about the 1936 Jarrow March, will go to make way for the new entertainment room, but Mr McConnell said the hostelry will retain its archive photographs.
