A TRAVELLERS’ site which has appeared next to a South Tyneside housing estate has sparked anger among residents.
The camp, which was set up on Saturday afternoon, is on land off Abingdon Way, next to Cotswolds Lane, in Boldon Colliery.
It is thought about 15 people have moved on to the land with a combination of small modern caravans and traditional trailers, along with horses.
However, residents living nearby are not happy with the set-up and want the travellers to move on as soon as possible.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “Why should we have to put up with this, just because they have decided to set up camp there?
“There are no toilet facilities, or washing provisions, so it’s going to be very unhygienic.
“Where are they going to be disposing of their waste?
“They just arrived on Saturday afternoon and started to make themselves at home. I’d say there’s probably about 15 people in total.
“Sometimes, kids play on the grass or people with dogs walk by on it.
“People shouldn’t be allowed to be able to do that.
“We have to live here and we have bought our homes, why should we have to put up with the mess?”
Officers from South Tyneside Council went out to visit the land, which is privately owned, yesterday to find out the intentions of the travellers. A spokesman has revealed that they will be notifying the landowner today to make him aware of the circumstances.
Meanwhile, workers will be monitoring the condition of the site.
The spokesman added: “We are aware of travellers at Cotswolds Lane in Boldon and officers have visited the site to determine their intentions.
“The land is privately owned and the council will be writing to the landowner today to make him aware.
“In the meantime, officers will monitor the condition of the site.”
Last December, the council gave the go-ahead for a permanent gypsy and traveller site, just a mile away at West Pastures, off Newcastle Road, West Boldon.
Each of the 11 pitches has space for two caravans and a detached brick building to provide kitchen and bathroom facilities, utility storage and general living space.
