THE family of a four-year-old girl left fighting for her life after a road accident have been told the next 24 hours are crucial.

The youngster suffered serious head injuries in the five-vehicle smash on Leam Lane, Jarrow, at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

She remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The girl was in the back of a VW Polo when it was hit by a silver Peugeot 406 from behind on the westbound carriageway, near Lindisfarne Roundabout.

The vehicle was pushed forward into a silver Renault Clio, which then crashed into a black Honda CRV and a grey Citroen Berlingo.

Police have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is currently helping with inquiries.

Since the news broke, dozens of people have left messages on the Gazette’s Facebook page wishing the girl a speedy recovery.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area and may have seen what happened.
