No fun for motorists - but a tunnel to be proud of

IN the third part of our visit to the TT2 project, the Gazette went to see how the lives of South Tyneside motorists will be improved by the changes at the 'complex roundabout' in Jarrow.

All these engineering marvels may be wonderful as a day out for tunnel buffs, but it hasn't been so much fun for the people of Jarrow.

Their main bugbear for over a year has been the 'roundabout from hell' at the Tyne Tunnel southern entrance.

The good news here though is that the changes are going to be all encompassing with the roundabout being completely removed.

Vehicles will access the A19 directly and pay their toll for both directions at the north end.

Those wishing to travel into Jarrow will use the new dualled route over the new flyover bridge due to be opened later this year. An additional road bridge is already open, which replaces the old one being demolished.

Jean-Stephane Bloquert, BTP's head of section, which includes the roundabout said: "The new arrangement will favour traffic to and from the tunnel.

"Eventually there will be less queues and better traffic flow. It's going to be much better for the people of South Tyneside."

Showing off his rapidly improving Geordie English, the French resident added:

"I have talked to many of the people around here and they are canny. We will give them a tunnel they can be proud of."
