Nurturing talent at £13m school

TALENTED South Tynesiders could be turned into the stars of the future at a new multi-million pound school.

Mortimer Community College, in South Shields, has been chosen to be the community hub for Find Your Talent (FYT), which aims to encourage young people to take part in a range of cultural activities.

The partnership between the Reading Road school and the Customs House will use the 13m building's new facilities.

FYT development officer Paul Martin said: "We believe the Customs House and FYT can bring to the South Tyneside area quality cultural and creative activities.

"By using Mortimer we have these lovely up-to-date facilities that the wider community might not have the chance to use.

"People travel outside the borough to do a lot of the activities on offer, but they are now on their doorsteps and free.

"It may be something they continue, or it might inspire someone else to take up a new skill."

Steven Liddle, PE teacher and out-of-hours co-ordinator, said: "The partnership aims to utilise the outstanding new facilities available at Mortimer for the local community.

"We really want to bring out young people's talents.

"So whatever your talent you're bound to find it down at Mortimer Community College."

Between 4.30pm and 5.30pm there are a range of activities on offer for youngsters aged up to 19.

The 12-week courses start today. To reserve a free place, call 456 6511.
