A SOUTH Tyneside opticians is focused on helping a lifesaving charity.

Andrew Gillies, an optometrist at Specsavers in King Street, South Shields, ran a raffle and handed out goodie bags in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), while glasses were serviced for a small donation.

Store director Bryan Clark said: "I am delighted we are able to help the RNLI.

"Hopefully our customers will help us raise enough to help."

Peter Mitchell, lifeboat operations manager for Sunderland RNLI, added: "This year the crew has completed 95 launches and rescued 90 people.

"We are grateful to Specsavers and the community for their support."
