Owners warned to lock up their bikes

HOLIDAYMAKERS are being urged to lock up their bikes securely after a spate of cycle thefts.

Three people staying at Sandhaven Caravan Park, South Shields, had their bikes stolen last weekend from outside their holiday homes.

The total cost came to about 700.

Two bikes were taken between 9pm Saturday and 9am Sunday while the third is believed to have been stolen at about 12.15am on Sunday.

The cycle thefts are the latest to hit South Tyneside's caravan parks.

Earlier this month, a Dutch couple staying at Lizard Lane Caravan and Camping Site, were left devastated after thieves stole their 1,300 bikes.

Neighbourhood Inspector Simon Charlton said: "We would encourage anyone leaving their bikes unattended – even for a few minutes – to ensure they are locked and, where possible, chained to a heavy object."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 03456 043 043.
