Parents are working class heroes for day

LITTLE 'Lord Sugars' from South Tyneside have received a masterclass in business – from their parents.

Cleadon Village C of E Primary School held a jobs fair to give the budding workers in the school an idea of what they might want to do when they're older.

And the teachers invited mums and dads to go in and talk to the youngsters about how they chose their careers.

It is the third year the school, in Boldon Lane, South Shields, has held the event, and 65 pupils, aged 10 and 11, took part.

They were joined by about 70 pupils from Dame Dorothy Primary in Sunderland and Canning Street Primary in Newcastle.

Year Six teacher Karen Paterson organised the day. She said: "It was a big success, and the parents who came put a tremendous amount of effort in.

"They had interactive workshops, brought in material for the children to read through and really engaged with the pupils.

"It went very, very well, and I'm really grateful to everyone who came in."

Craig Fitzakerly, who lives in Cleadon Village, was one of the parents who spoke to pupils.

His son and daughter, Matthew, 10, and Kate, seven, are at the school, and he runs Fitz Architects, in Sunderland.

He said: "I was asked to do a similar thing in a school in Sunderland a few years ago, so suggested to the head of Cleadon Village Primary that they could do something similar.

"The parents of the pupils have a wide range of jobs, so it seemed like a great idea, and the school have really made a go of it.

"The children all seemed to love it. They got really involved and asked plenty of questions.

"I took in a model and some books, and they had a go on some of the software I use.

"Some of the youngsters showed real enthusiasm and have real promise.

"It's a good way to give them an idea of what they want to do before they get to comprehensive school."
