Pensioner killed in A1 crash has been named

A WOMAN from South Tyneside killed in a smash on the A1 has been named.

Margaret Hilda Foley from South Shields died en route to hospital after her car was involved in a collision with a lorry.

The collision happened on Monday morning on a single crriageway stretch of the road near Berwick, 100 yards north of Haggerston.

The 81-year-old had been travelling in a Nissan Note which collided with a lorry.

The pensioner was cut free by firefighters and treated at the scene by paramedics but died on her way to Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington.

The driver of the lorry, a 55-year-old man, escaped injury.

An inquest Margaret Foley’s death has been opened and adjourned by North Northumberland coroner Tony Brown.
