THE stricken trawler which sparked a major rescue operation off the South Shields coast could be salvaged today.
Fishing boat sparked has been grounded at Littlehaven Beach since yesterday morning after hitting the south Tyne Pier and beginning to sink.
The 46-tonne boat, which suffered damaged to her bow and began taking in water, remains on the spot today as further attempts are made to move her.
A boom has now been placed around the boat, and efforts will be made this morning to repair her broken bow and refloat her.
It’s then hoped, during this afternoon’s high tide, she will be dragged up the beach for a full assessment of the damage.
The captain of the vessel was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with a head injury. The other two crew members were uninjured.
