Mark Bayliss, associate technical director for Miller Homes, said: “We have submitted a planning application for 334 new homes on the site of the old Siemens factory in land off Victoria Road West in Hebburn.

“We believe creating new homes on this derelict brownfield site would not only bring much needed new high quality family homes to the area but also enhance its identity.

“In advance of submitting our application we liaised with the local community, South Tyneside Council and the local highways authority about developing our proposals and we now await the planning committee’s decision.”

The testing station on the Victoria Road West site was demolished four years ago, while the Clothier laboratory was bulldozed in early 2013. Opened by then Technology Minister, Tony Benn, in 1970, the huge grey laboratory building dominated part of the Hebburn skyline for more than 40 years.
