Poet James Kirkup is back in print
POETS and writers came together at a South Tyneside library to launch a reprinted collection of poetry by the late James Kirkup.
A Bewick Bestiary features animal woodcuts by Thomas Bewick as well as poems by South-Shields born Kirkup.
Published by Morpeth-based Red Squirrel Press, the book was relaunched at South Shields Central Library, with a series of readings by Gazette reporter Terry Kelly, his playwright brother Tom, poet Alistair Robinson and local studies librarian Anne Sharp.
The original work, published in 1971, was launched at Newcastle's Hancock Museum, with readings by Kirkup.
Kirkup wrote more than 30 books.
He taught for many years in Japan, before moving to Andorra where he died earlier this year, aged 91.
