Police step up street patrols

POLICE are stepping up town centre patrols to crack down on thieves who target shoppers.

Uniformed police will be out in the borough's main shopping areas and car parks to stop crooks in their tracks.

A CCTV van will also be visiting shopping areas where people can go for crime prevention advice.

The move is part of Northumbria Police force-wide campaign 'Let's draw a line under crime'.

Acting Detective Inspector for South Tyneside, Keith Thornton, said: "We want to make it as difficult as possible for thieves to have a good time at someone else's expense, and the high-profile patrols are part of this."

Motorists are also being urged not to leave items on show in cars while shoppers are being reminded not to leave purses on display or lying on top of open bags.

Det Insp Thornton, added: "We would ask for the public to work alongside us by following crime prevention advice to protect themselves and their valuables and remaining vigilant while out shopping.

"While our message to thieves is simple – we are watching you and won't hesitate in making an arrest."
