A COUNCILLOR is calling on the council to fix a stretch of road in his ward.

Coun George Elsom, who represents Cleadon Park, says he's fed up of highlighting the condition of the road at The Lonnen in South Shields, and claims nothing has been done.

He says there are 74 sections of Tarmac and concrete either missing or damaged by passing vehicles.

"I've brought up the condition of this road at council meetings and the community area forum, but it's still not fixed," said Coun Elsom, the ward's Real Independent representative.

"I've also called out the council's highways department to fix sections when they get really bad, but they just seem to put little patches over the problem area.

"This does not last long- term and soon we're back to where we started.

The road is covered in patched-up bits, it's a mess."

Residents in the area, who are mainly pensioners, say they're also fed up of having to put up with the noise of motorists driving over the bumps and gaps in the road.

One 62-year-old resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "We live in bungalows and a lot of our bedrooms are right on the road.

"When a car goes past you should hear the racket it makes. It keeps us awake at night.

"There's so many gaps in the road, all it will take is for a bus or a car to go over it wrongly and catch a wheel, there could be an awful accident."

Coun Elsom hopes the road will now be resurfaced so it's smooth.

He added: "It really isn't good enough, this road is on a popular bus route and it's used a lot. It needs to be fixed."

A council spokesman said: "Every year we have a set amount of money for highways maintenance.

"As part of this year's programme of highways maintenance works, some repairs will be carried out on parts of The Lonnen.

"South Tyneside Council takes the issue of road safety very seriously, and we will carry out an inspection of this particular section of the road to assess its condition."
