Pub is ale and hearty after winning award
A SOUTH Shields pub is "ale" and hearty after winning a prestigious award for the second year running.
The Steamboat, in Mill Dam, South Shields, is developing a reputation as one of the region's best real ale pubs.
The watering hole regularly has eight cask ales from which customers can choose and also stages real ale festivals every year.
The pub was named by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) as Pub of the Year for Sunderland, South Tyneside and Washington last year.
Now that feat has been repeated after the boozer won the title for the second consecutive year.
Bar manager Kathleen Brain is already planning to make it a hat-trick in 2011.
It has been amazing year for the pub – it came within a whisker of being named by Camra as the region's top boozer.
The campaign group's judges toured pubs in Durham, Darlington, Tyneside, Northumberland and the Wear Valley to find the best of the bunch.
The Steamboat emerged with the top score, alongside The Boathouse in Wylam, Northumberland.
The Steamboat, a fixture in Camra's annual Good Beer Guide, only ended up finishing second after the judges decided they had to choose between their two top-scoring pubs to name a winner.
Miss Brain said: "Our reputation is continuing to grow, year on year.
"Winning the Camra award for the second year in a row is a real achievement, and we fully intend do it again next time around."
The pub will also again be entered into the regional finals, hoping to make up for last time's disappointment of just missing out on the title.
