Pupils have designs on new fences

YOUNGSTERS are all at sea over a competition to design new fences for homes in South Tyneside.

More than 60 pupils from Marsden Primary School in Whitburn are taking part in the contest.

The challenge is being backed by South Shields artist Bob Olley, best known for the iconic Westoe Netty mural.

The youngsters, from Years 5 and 6, will find out who has won next week when the contest's judges return to the school to announce the winner.

South Tyneside Homes is replacing fences in streets in Whitburn, including May Grove and Marsden Avenue.

It has asked the pupils to come up with an idea for a design to feature on the fences based on a seaside theme.

Whitburn and Marsden ward councillor Tracey Dixon is one of the judges.

She said: "We wanted to involve local children in the design process.

"They will be making a piece of history which will be around for a long time.

"The winning designer will be able to walk past the fences in years to come and show people what they created."

Representatives from South Tyneside Homes, Mr Olley and Whitburn and Marsden ward councillors will pick the winner on Tuesday.

Work on the new fences is due to start in the new year.
