Race is getting back on track

THE rebirth of British athletics could spell good news for a long- established South Tyneside road race.

The first Jarrow and Hebburn Athletic Club Road Race was staged back in 1962.

More than 200 competitors regularly compete in the event, and past winners have included Steve Cram, Brendan Foster and Paul Cuskin.

The next race is to be held on Monday, with competitors taking in a 10k route from the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow and around the King George V Playing Fields. The event will also incorporate a three-mile fun run.

Organisers are hoping for bumper entries this year after the success of British athletes at the recent European Championships in Barcelona.

The team's haul of 19 medals was the best ever, and could mark the return of a new "golden age" for British athletics.

That would be particularly timely with the staging of the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Tom Tweddle, treasurer of the athletics club, believes there is a renaissance in British athletics dawning.

He said: "Clubs are on a drive to significantly increase the number of people taking exercise and there is no better form than running.

"It's a passport to not just fitness or a career in athletics, but provides a grounding for people wanting to compete in other sports.

"The success of our athletes at the European Championships has been an inspiration, and we are expecting a bumper turn-out for the run.

"With the Olympics less than two years away, the sport is really on the up."

Washington-based engineering firm TRM is one of the sponsors of this year's race.

Entries will be accepted on the night from about 7pm. To apply in advance, call Monkton Stadium on 489 1283 or e-mail phil@crowellonline.co.uk
